We live in extraordinary times right now. Art During Lockdown – A Garden as Refuge
I paint, I take photographs, I make things, I plant things. I watch things grow. I like walking barefoot in the summer but often have cold feet in the winter. I love stormy weather. I also like the smell of rain and smoky air on an autumn morning. I think early mornings are the best part of the day.
I don’t know if less is more but I do think less is better.
By immersing myself in nature I am often inspired.
I am a wanderer. I often walk and explore the countryside and through painting I examine my understanding of our place in the world we live in. I often get lost and I continue to search.
My response is recorded on canvas through marks that are interplay of intention and chance. Gestural marks contain fleetingness and capture elusive things that cannot be seen.
We live in extraordinary times right now. During lockdown my landscape was narrowed down to my immediate surroundings.
The garden has become some kind of refuge, a constant in times of uncertainty. I spent much time drawing and painting … and growing veg of course, like everyone else. Self-sufficiency regained value. Restrictions and changes led to re-evaluation of life. Where do we go from here?
